SEATTLE - The run support Felix Hernandez deserved in his three previous starts finally arrived. Logan Morrison hit two long home runs, Hernandez threw seven strong innings to win for the first time since June 2 and the Seattle Mariners used a six-run fourth inning to rout the Boston Red Sox 12-3 on Monday night. Seattle won its fourth straight after a weekend sweep in Kansas City. The Mariners finally provided Hernandez (9-2) with some runs and battered right-hander John Lackey (8-5) in his shortest outing since September 2011. Seattle had scored one run total while Hernandez was on the mound in his previous three starts. Getting a dozen against the Red Sox was more than enough for Seattles ace. "I was so happy. They came through. They were pretty good," Hernandez said. Hernandez set a club record with his eighth straight start pitching at least seven innings and allowing two earned runs or less. He struck out six, walked none and efficiently handed the Red Sox their fourth loss in five games. Hernandezs only miscues were David Ortizs RBI single in the first and Mike Napolis solo homer in the fourth. Morrison had the first multihomer game of his career. His solo shot in the second inning off Lackey pulled Seattle even and he added to the offensive outburst with a two-run homer in the seventh, a 421-foot drive to centre field off reliever Chris Capuano. Morrison finished with four hits for the third time in his career and four RBIs. Morrison felt he started to have better at bats last week against San Diego and carried over into the weekend series in Kansas City. "Just feeling like I could stay behind the ball better, put better swings on better pitches," Morrison said. "You stick to the process, stick to the process, keep grinding out at-bats and the next thing you know you look at the end of the year and have pretty good numbers. Thats what I hope happens this year." Seattles big fourth inning started with Robinson Canos double. Kyle Seager followed with an RBI single and Morrison was able to beat the Red Sox shift with a single into right field to put runners on the corners. Lackey was visibly miffed that Morrisons grounder got through the defence and he followed by walking Mike Zunino to load the bases. Dustin Ackley then had the at-bat that changed the game. Ackley made Lackey work for 13 pitches, eventually hitting a grounder to first. Napoli threw to second to get the second out but Lackey did not cover first base and the chance at an inning ending double play was missed. Seager scored and Lackey struggled with his composure. A wild pitch allowed Morrison to score and a walk to Brad Miller and Willie Bloomquists single loaded the bases. With one swing, Chavez surpassed his RBI total for the season. Brock Holt was playing shallow and unable to chase down Chavezs line drive, clearing the bases and giving Seattle a 7-2 lead. "I was trying to put something in play the whole at-bat and score a run there. He was making pitches," Ackley said. "There were maybe one or two, I could have handled but fouled off the rest. ... Fortunately it went a long way and he tired out a little bit. Lackey was done after 3 2-3 innings, snapping a string of 39 straight starts going at least five innings. He gave up seven hits and walked three. Lackey needed 36 pitches to get through three innings and threw 38 pitches in getting just two outs in the fourth. "I wasnt able to make a pitch to get out of there," Lackey said. "It kind of starting to go downhill and I couldnt stop it." NOTES: Hernandez allowed a homer for the first time since April 21 vs. Houston. ... Lackeys last start of less than five innings was May 14, 2013, vs. Tampa Bay when he went 4 1-3 innings. ... Boston manager John Farrell said its possible injured OF Shane Victorino (hamstring) could rejoin the team this weekend in New York depending on his rehab starts this week. "FIFA is not coming now with less people. Instead, we are increasing our staff during the World Cup, obviously, and we are not hiding our brand," director of security Ralf Mutschke said on Thursday. DENVER -- Their stars were spectators on this night and the Pittsburgh Penguins still managed to cool off the Colorado Avalanche. Jussi Jokinen skated across the front of the crease and roofed a shot over sprawling goalie Semyon Varlamov to give the Penguins a 3-2 win in a shootout on Sunday night. After Jokinens goal, Marc-Andre Fleury made a pad save on Gabriel Landeskogs shot, snapping Colorados six-game winning streak and denying Varlamov franchise records for most home and overall wins in a season. Colorado coach Patrick Roy said his team might have taken the Penguins lightly after seeing Sydney Crosby and Chris Kunitz joining centre Evgeni Malkin (foot) in street clothes, leaving Pittsburgh without its top three scorers. "Tonight when we saw Crosby not in the lineup, Kunitz not in the lineup, on and on, I think it was a normal reaction to say, Hey, we have an easier game tonight," Roy said. Locked into the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, the Penguins sat several of their regulars. Crosby missed his first game of the season because of an unspecified injury. He has never played all 82 games in a season. They also were without defencemen Brooks Orpik and Olli Maatta, scratched with unspecified injuries, just like Kunitz. "I probably would have done the same," Roy said. "Were thinking of doing the same at the end depending where we are in the standings. Were going to rest Varly probably the last two games. Absolutely not (offended). I think they did what was the right thing for their team. The only sad part theres a lot of people coming here to see Sidney Crosby play. Thats fine, thats part of our business." Landeskog had mixed feelings about Crosby sitting this one out. "Of course hes the best player in the league," Landeskog said. "I would have liked playing against him. But at the same time he took a slap shot off my knee the last time we played against him." The Penguins played with precision and poise despite having nothing on the linee and a bevy of backups.dddddddddddd "Yeah we did," Brandon Sutter after posting his first multiple-goal game of the season. "We didnt have a great game last night (a 4-0 loss at Minnesota) but to come back here 24 hours later and play the way we did was great, especially with the lineup we had. Everyone played well, top to bottom. You give guys an opportunity its amazing what can happen. A lot of guys played great, especially our goaltender. He was awesome." Fleury, who stopped all three shots in the shootout, had 39 saves, including one in the closing seconds of overtime after Penguins defenceman Paul Martin was sent to the penalty box with 38 seconds remaining for delay of game after he knocked the puck over the glass in the defensive zone. "Its a credit tto our team to be able to battle without a lot of key guys," Fleury said. The Avs lost for just the fifth time in 39 one-goal games this season (28-5-6), and they can blame their 0-for-5 performance on power plays, something Fleury had a lot to do with. After falling behind 2-0 on Sutters pair of second-period goals, Colorado scored twice in the third period. Ryan OReilly scored his team-leading 28th goal of the season 18 seconds into the period, and Patrick Bordeleau redirected defenceman Tyson Barries shot into the net with 3:13 left. Varlamov stopped all 31 shots on Saturday in St. Louis to earn his 40th win of the season, tying Roys franchise record. He finished 24-10-3 on home ice, matching Roys record for home wins set in 2000-01, when the Avs won the Stanley Cup for a second time. With the point they picked up, the Avs are two ahead of Chicago for second place in the Central Division, which would give them home-ice advantage in their first-round playoff matchup. "To get two points would have made us feel better, but at least we got one," Bordeleau said. NOTES: The Penguins avenged a 1-0 loss to Colorado at home on Oct. 21. ...
